- In essence, for a movie like Avatar, we aren’t just consuming the movie itself, we are consuming the hype about the movie – One of the aspects of this phenomenon that I’ve always found fascinating is the seemingly spontaneous impulse to applaud as the closing credits roll. This form of approbation makes sense when the director, screenwriter, and actors are present at the screening, but I’ve always found it odd when none of the people involved in the making of the film are in attendance. But perhaps instead of cheering the creative work of the director and stars, the applause is meant to celebrate the shared experience of watching collectively, the genuinely felt enthusiasm for discovering something new together.

Kävin minäkin vilkaisemassa Avataria sen vartin verran, mitä levitysyhtiö katsoi hyväksi kansalle paljastaa. Olin näkemääni tyyytyväinen: traileri näytti tietokoneen ruudulla animaatiolta, mutta isolta kankaalta 3d:nä katsottuna se näytti elokuvalta.
En tiedä, onko Avatarin cgi jotenkin maailmojajärisyttävän uudenlaista, mutta sujuvalta mocap/animaatio näytti. Ensimmäisenä sopivana adjektiivina minulle pälkähti päähän huomaamaton. Toki 16 minuuttiin mahtui jo muutama varsin epätodellinen kuva, mutta kokonaisuus oli huomattavasti realistisempi – jos niin voi sanoa – kuin pelkäsin. Olen siis vahvasti eri mieltä siitä, että jälki näyttäisi Xbox-pelin trailerilta. Immersiota ei hirmuisesti ollut, mutta siihen tarvittaisiin kait ainakin IMAX-kangas.
Tarinasta ei voi vielä sanoa juuta ja jaata. Ihan kauhean huolissaan ei tarvinne oletusarvoisesti olla, sillä käsikirjoittaja on tiettävästi joskus aiemminkin raapustanut pari siedettävää leffaa. Okei, esittelypätkässä oli kyllä jokunen kliseinen hetki, kuten sankarin taakse hiippaileva hirviö ja Pysytäänkö paikallaan vai juostaan? – Juostaan!

Jos jostain pitää valittaa, niin shakycamista. Cameron on selittänyt, että leikkaukset voi pitää nopeina, jos tipauttaa niiden ajaksi 3d-efektin pois käytöstä, mutta käsivaralla (mukamas) kuvatuista viidakonläpijuoksuista ei kyllä saanut mitään selvää.
Edit: Kalle ei vakuuttunut. Jutussa on yksi hyvä pointti, joka jäi sanomatta: previkan tekstitys oli toteutettu tosi häiritsevästi. Ehkä se oli tehty kiireessä.
