- Elokuva-arvostelu: Enkelit ja demonit – Tavallaan Ron Howard on täydellinen tekijä tällaiselle elokuvalle. Howard on ohjaaja vailla ominaisuuksia, joka harvoin epäonnistuu täysin ja tuottaa välillä jopa vallan mainioita elokuvia. Niistä ei kuitenkaan koskaan löydy ohjaajan auteur-tyyppistä sormenjälkeä, sillä Howardille sujuva tarinankerronta tuntuisi olevan arvoista tärkein. Sillä opilla on tästäkin saatu sujuva 150-minuuttinen möhkäle. Huonomminkin voisi käydä.
- Elokuva-arvostelu: Scar 3D – Näin erittäin todentuntuista unta, jossa kävelin videovuokraamoon 1980-luvulla. Nappasin hyllystä uusimman kauhuelokuvan ihan vain kannen perusteella ja menin vhs-nauhan kanssa kotiin. Aloin katsoa elokuvaa, kunnes yhtäkkiä heräsin ja tajusin, että se olikin ”Suomen ensimmäinen uuden tekniikan kolmiulotteinen kauhuelokuva”, Scar 3D:n.
- Elokuva-arvostelu: Che – Kapinallinen – 1980-luvulla mainoslause sanoi, että maaseutua ei voi tuoda. Che Guevara oli täsmälleen päinvastaista mieltä: hän uskoi, että vallankumouksen voi viedä, nimittäin Kuubasta muihin valtioihin. Väärässä oli.

- Elokuva-arvostelu: 12 Rounds – Puhutaan suoraan: 12 Rounds on huono elokuva. Enkä nyt tarkoita, että se on huono filmifriikkien käyttämien ”elokuva on humanistista taidetta” -kriteerien mukaan. Tarkoitan, että se on suttuisen oloinen, persoonaton ja sekava nykytoimintaelokuva.
- Elokuva-arvostelu: Möröt vastaan muukalaiset – Pääosassa on Susan, 15-metrinen jättiläisnainen (Jättiläisnaisen hyökkäys, 1953). Muita sankareita ovat hyytelömäinen B.O.B. (Valuva kuolema, 1958), torakkapäinen tiedemies (Kärpänen, 1958), kalan ja ihmisen yhdistävä Puuttuva rengas (Mustan laguunin hirviö, 1954) ja Ötökkäsaurus (Mothra, 1961). Onneksi Möröt vastaan muukalaiset ei sentään seiso pelkkien leffaviittausten varassa, vaan tarina toimii omillaankin. Muukalaisten laskeutuessa sentään vinkataan ensin ensin Kolmannen asteen yhteyteen, sitten Star Trekiin ja lopuksi Beverly Hillsin kyttään.
- Elokuva-arvostelu: Gran Torino – Kowalskin suurin vahvuus elokuvahahmona on siinä, että Clint Eastwood tuo häneen mukanaan kaikki aiemmat kovanaaman roolinsa. Ei taida olla toista näyttelijää, jonka roolittamisella olisi saavutettu sama tulos. Mutta Mulkvqist-Eastwood ei ole ikuinen mulkvqist, hän ei voi olla sitä enää 2000-luvulla. Yrittääkö hän sovittaa menneitä tekojaan? Vai onko Eastwood kiero nero, joka tietää täsmälleen, miten voi imagoaan väännellä?

To counter the tyranny of fantasy entrenched on Wall Street and in Washington as well as in Hollywood, it seems possible that engagement with the world as it is might reassert itself as an aesthetic strategy. Perhaps it would be worth considering that what we need from movies, in the face of a dismaying and confusing real world, is realism.
